Cultivating Karma Yoga

Guidance for Volunteers

Living Abhayam as a volunteer is an internal attitude rather than an external job description.

"The goal of Seva is not achievement or praise, but the cultivation of selflessness, compassion, and presence."

Core Volunteer Attitudes

  • Humility: Recognize that the opportunity to serve is a gift to your own spiritual growth. Never adopt a stance of pity or moral superiority.
  • Quiet Action: Perform Seva quietly without seeking public recognition, social media exposure, or organizational praise.
  • Respect for Dignity: Honor the self-respect and privacy of every person you interact with. Never treat individuals as targets for charity.
  • Discernment & Responsibility: Always balance compassion with wisdom. Respect professional and safety boundaries.

Documenting & Reviewing Reflections

After completing an act of Sahayam, volunteers are encouraged to write a quiet reflection about what transpired and what was learned internally.

To protect confidentiality and individual dignity, published stories undergo a simple human review workflow:

  1. Volunteer performs Sahayam in real life.
  2. Volunteer writes a private draft reflection removing identifying details.
  3. An authorized Yogajyoti coordinator reviews tone, privacy, and safety.
  4. Consent is verified wherever a person could be identified.
  5. The reflection is published only upon approval.

Understand Volunteer Boundaries

Ensure safety, safeguarding, and respect for legal/medical boundaries.
