The Volunteer Attitude

How We Live It

Living Abhayam is an intuitive journey of mindfulness, discernment, and responsible action.

Abhayam is not governed by rigid Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or automated workflows. Instead, it relies on cultivating a quiet, reflective attitude within each volunteer. Below is the 8-step reflective model that guides our actions in daily life.

1

Notice

Develop sensitivity and presence of mind to notice people and situations around you without distraction.

2

Pause

Resist impulsive reactions or dramatic intervention. Take a moment to calm the mind and perceive clearly.

3

Discern

Ask whether genuine need exists, or if help is actually requested and beneficial for the person's dignity.

4

Assess

Consider your availability, physical safety, personal competence, and boundaries. Check if family or professionals are better suited.

5

Act

Offer appropriate Sahayam with humility, kindness, and quiet presence — without expectation of praise or reward.

6

Close Responsibly

Ensure the person is left safe and connected to sustainable family or community support, avoiding undue dependency.

7

Reflect

Record what happened internally. Ask what you learned about yourself, compassion, boundaries, and Karma Yoga.

8

Continue

Allow repeated small acts of Sahayam to gradually cultivate a permanent attitude of Seva in your character.
